Diagnostic Testing

Your physician may order one or more diagnostic tests to help evaluate a problem or in the course of a routine follow up procedure. This section will help answer some of the questions you may have or when you come to Osler Medical for diagnostic testing. (Laboratory procedures and blood tests are covered under a separate section.)

Where do I go for these diagnostic tests?

The majority of diagnostic tests are done at the main Osler Medical building at 930 S. Harbor City Blvd. (US 1) in Melbourne. Take the elevator to the 2nd floor and follow the signs to the diagnostic reception desk. Our front office and technical staff will care for you there. The CT machine is located at the rear of the US1 building, to the left (if you come up the back stairs).

Our Sleep Centers now are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Disorders!

Osler Sleep Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disorders.
* Do you snore?
* Have you been told that you stop breathing while you sleep?
* Do you wake from sleep snoring, choking, or struggling for breath?
* Are you overweight?
* Are you sleeping during the day?
* Do you have headaches when you wake up?
* Do you fall asleep unintentionally?
* When you wake up, do you feel unrefreshed?

If you have three or more of the above symptoms speak with your physician about having a sleep study.

People most likely to have or develop sleep apnea are those who snore loudly, are overweight, or have some physical abnormality in the nose, throat or other parts of the upper airway. Sleep apnea seems to run in some families suggesting a possible genetic basis.

Sleep Apnea is treatable through a variety of methods, both surgical and non-surgical. The specific therapy for sleep apnea is tailored to the individual patient based on medical history and the results of a diagnostic sleep study.

Do any of the Osler Medical community offices offer tests?

Some of the community offices offer limited testing, but the majority of tests are done at the Osler Medical buildings on US1. The Osler Sleep Center is located at our Wuesthoff Medical Office building at 240 N. Wickham Rd. next to Wuesthoff Hospital Melbourne.

Are there any preparations for these tests?

YES. Many tests have specific preparations that you will need to undertake to ensure that these tests give your physician accurate results. The person who schedules your test will give you instructions for the preparation needed. Please be sure your questions are answered fully before completing your discussion with the person who is scheduling your test.

May I take my medication on the morning of the test?

NOT IN ALL CASES. Please ask your physician which medications you should or should not take on the morning of the scheduled test. The Osler Medical diagnostic staff is very experienced, capable and caring. Any questions or concerns you may have are very important to us. It is our promise that you will be treated professionally as an Osler patient and warmly as an Osler friend.
